UAAP inspired 2k10 Presidential Race

Sharing a cup of coffee with friends has been a part of my social life. One late night, we hanged out in a coffee shop along Katipunan Avenue. Since we talked almost about everything that happens in the society, we came across the 2010 Presidential race. Though we are not registered voters at the time, we each knew whose names we want to write on the ballots. However different are choices were, we managed to give points on why we chose our own candidates; from their public service experience, their relations to big financial corporations, their family background, political affiliations and the so-called hidden political agenda even the possible outcomes of the above-mentioned factors to the present Philippine socio-econo-political status. At the heat of the discussion, one claimed that the presidential race is UAAP inspired. Maybe the reason this was opened up was that the coffee shop is situated between UP Diliman and Ateneo De Manila University. Based on what we knew then, we finally realized that yes, the presidential candidates we were discussing either came from any of the universities that play in the UAAP. But this was a month ago. Now, new players joined the race or should I say, popularity contest.

I decided to assert the claim that the 2k10 presidential race is UAAP inspired. Much to my surprise, they all either had their undergraduate studies, graduate studies, post-graduate studies, or took up Law in those universities. The claim was somehow proven but some points we had were rejected as Bayani did not come from UP as we previously thought and Gordon had his undergraduate degree in Ateneo, not UP.

The candidates have come from various top universities and colleges. I never really looked at a candidate's educational attainment, although the level of education attained would give bearing to a person's capabilities, strength and personality. Some candidates give emphasis on their education, making it a proof that they are well-educated and trained for a service as great as te presidency.

Of all the candidates for President and Vice President, it is Jejomar Binay who has the highest educational attainment and the most number of degrees and has attended numerous schools. I bet he loves to learn and gives a great importance of education.

Three of the presidential candidates attended the early education at the Ateneo Grade School or Ateneo High School. Meaning they had the means to attend a private school as such and that the school indeed lives up to its vision and has produced leaders in the society.

Since the internet is my only source of information as of the moment, the credibility of this information may be questionable and lacking as Jamby Madrigal and Edu Manzano did not provide their educational attainment on the election profiles circulating around the net. Thus this blog is open for corrections.

It is my greatest wish that these candidates would give a great emphasis on educational reforms and ensure that the Filipino youth grows up to be an educated, respectful and healthy man. Some of these presidential aspirants were born poor and yet have managed to become successful in their respective fields. They may have lacked the resources to enter a good educational institution but still made it to the plenary halls and served the Filipino people, which is the greatest achievement of all.

Phillipine Holidays for 2010

According to my research on the Internet, we have many Philippine Holidays this year. Thanks to Republic Act 9492, which provides that non-religious holidays be moved to the nearest Monday, we have longer weekends allowing us more time to spend with family, friends or with our bed.

For those who want to travel this year, please check the following holidays so you can prepare for that much-awaited trip you always dreamed of.

Based on PGMA's Presidential Proclamation 184, these are the declared regular holidays, special (non-working) days and special holidays (for all schools) for the 2010. But please check with the local news for any changes or with your boss who might have other plans for you these holidays.

January 1 – New Year’s Day

April 1 – Maundy Thursday
April 2 – Good Friday
April 9 -Araw ng Kagitingan

May 1 – Labor Day
May 10- National elections

June 14 – Independence Day (supposedly June 12, in case you might get confused)
August 30 – National Heroes Day

November 29 – Bonifacio Day (supposedly November 30)

December 25 – Christmas Day
December 27 – Rizal Day (December 30).

The Special Holidays are as follows:

February 22 – EDSA Day (School Holidays)
August 23 – Ninoy Aquino Day

November 1 – All Saints Day

December 24 – Christmas Eve
December 31- Last day of the year

There are also holidays depending on the city where you work or study, like Quezon City Day which falls on August 19th, check the Net for such info or better yet check with your municipal office.

If the government wishes to declare holidays for special purposes like a death of a political or religious leader, in the middle of a disaster, a storm, national emergencies, it will be announced in every news channel so be sure to check the local news program once in a while.

Go make that holiday worthwhile, not stay in bed wishing for it to last forever. Plan that holiday dream now, may it be just finishing a book you have been reading for years, go out of town or meet your high school friends whom you have not seen since high school graduation.

Dreaming is the first step, Planning is next.

Happy Holidays!

AVATAR (a socio-econo political outlook)

I finally saw the much-talked about movie of 2009, "Avatar". I was excited the moment the 3D glasses was handed to me. It was my first and definitely will be the start of many more 3D film-watching.

It met my expectations, the graphics, the digital enhancement and the whole artistic effect. The so many socio-econo-political issues that the movie exposed made it really worth my money and my time.

I am more than a film critic. I see what a film feeds its viewers and I look beyond the obvious. The rest of the world may give a standing ovation for a movies' cinematic features but for me a movie is worth a stand only when it conveys reality, informs the audience and imparts truth.

Just like almost all Hollywood films, it once again showed the strength of the US Military. Providing us with visuals of the future of technology, that the institution holds the future of the military defense.

The following are interesting points to discuss for the intellectual and the critical:

1. US Military vs. Science

One conflict that was evident in the movie was the conflicting beliefs and systems of science and the military itself. It is true that the military does work with science or somehow a science itself. But let us look beyond, the science team works based on observation and countless data while the military team works with observation, countless data and terror. Science acts based on cognition, Military acts based on its feelings. The latter uses aggression to get what it wants, diplomacy usually does not prevail because its system of beliefs does not work on such virtues. It is a male-dominated institution, so it is fueled by logic and empowered by testosterone, actually lots of it. In some cases it only works based on the sudden rise of the male hormone and adrenaline. The scientists wanted to gather more information, more analysis and more careful planning. They wanted to exercise diplomacy to get what they want but when they are in conflict with the men of war, they were overpowered by the latter's aggression and strength.
No wonder towards the end of the film, they became trigger-happy swines and proved that men are indeed members of the animal kingdom.

2. Stop U.S. Aggression

The U.S. had always been part of almost every war in the whole world. It does not stop there, even in outer space, they are using its power to steal resources for its own income. They will do all measures to get a nation's natural resources and gain money even if it meant destroying life. It has always used it top-of-the-line technology to create a relationship masking as a friendly one with benefits. As soon as it has sucked all the resources that are of its interest, it leaves and moves on to the next one.
How many nations has this country destroyed to get gold, diamond, oil and so many other resources? How many people were sent to kill each other for the benefit of the U.S. government or at least by its rulers? How many have been deceived by its prowess? How many have been abused, threatened and killed to give way to its plans of a new world? Countless.
It has ruled the world in so many decision -making and has bypassed many authorities to pursue its interests. It has conducted numerous friendly visits, donations and peacekeeping acts only to mask its true intentions. It loans money for an interest greater than its original value.
Stop U.S. Aggression on the natives, of tribes and of innocent people. Stop the war for fuel.

3. WAR is never the answer.

Wars have brought so many deaths and destruction more than any other event in history. Not only it is very costly, it also deceives people that anger and hate will solve the problem. It is natural to be angry and hate enemies but terrorizing them and later kill them will only make you be more angry and aggressive.
A war only propels one's ego. A war is declared not really to defend a nation but to satisfy a nation's pride and ego. It is after all pride and ego that has led rulers to declare war.
Offense is not always the best defense. Diplomacy and communication are the answer. But make sure the negotiator is the best man for the job.

4. We are one with Nature.
A single change in the balance of nature can lead to numerous damages. Nature is one with us and we are related. May the flower that bloomed in a minute and died the next will have an effect on a butterfly or on a lady who was captivated by its beauty.
Everything we need is in nature all we have to do is find and use it. Nature can heal us and empower us. She has provided protection, care and strength in times of crisis. Think of the numerous medicines sold on drugstores, they promised good health and cures but the natural sometimes still work better and brought good results. If one contradicts Nature, balance will be altered and might lead to chaos.

5. It is the future

The star wars saga introduced us to a possibility that in the future, nations of other planets or stars can come together and form the Confederation. It gave us a glimpse of what is now and tomorrow. AS what I have always asked, "what is next after 3D, video calls and the computer?" The hologram. Tomorrow we might be talking to our relatives in a form of a hologram projected before our very eyes through a small gadget.
We might sleep and enter a new body in a different space and time with the same consciousness. We might even be friends with our planetary neighbors and even shop in the moon. There are countless possibilities but science fiction may be fiction now but tomorrow it becomes reality.
It is true that some movies inspired inventors and scientist to create something beyond our imagination. So I often wondered whether these films predicted the future or they created the future. Or perhaps, these filmmakers have been to future or they have been in the past and are just bringing these information to us through the big screen.
One thing is for sure though, film makers and writers like these are courageous geniuses who went out of the box, defied reality and went against their colleagues advices. How I wonder who amongst us Filipinos would do the same. How I wish that one of us would bring us the future.

6. There is always Someone or Something to look up to

No matter what tribe, nation or reality we are in we will always have Someone to guide us. It may not be God, Allah or Eywa but there is someone stronger and powerful than us who will be our refuge. Someone whom we will seek for help, cure and strength. Someone or something that will bring us all together in one place.
Every civilization has its own deity. For every civilized man believes that there is something higher than him, that there is a Higher being that put him into existence. Often we forget to look up to the Being higher than us, but never in a man's life that he will never look up this Being.
Man would always create this Higher Being through any form he can because without it, he feels incomplete.

Backpacking Dreamer

Gracee will see places this year and the next. Dreaming is free but if chances do happen, then she shall make miracles for herself and for her friends. Just like what any traveling agent would say, "find a place, plan your stay and we will do the rest".

We are free to travel, however travel expenses take that freedom from us. But that should not stop us from making plans even if in the end, none of the plans get implemented. So here are the places I would like to see this year of the Tiger. Whichever comes first does not matter as long as they happen.

*Boracay. (Aklan) Considered one of the best beaches in the world, its white sand and crystal waters make it a haven for local and international tourists. I want to walk its fine sand and cool waters this year. The accommodations range from the luxurious to the tight in budget traveler but as for every one who happened to be there before, it is worth every peso.

*Puerto Princesa City. (Palawan) A highly-urbanized city in the South, it caters to various tourists every year. I want to see the underground rivers, crocodile farm and dive the clear waters along its coastline.

*Anawangin Cove. (Zambales) This place is famous among campers and backpackers for there are no commercialized resorts nor buildings around the area. It also has white sand and surprisingly some pine trees lining the shore. Boatrides and long walks are pretty much the mode of transportation here so as some bloggers suggested, it is better to travel in groups. So I think I really need to find some friends to go with me. Anyone interested?

* Taal Lake. (Batangas) Coming to this place is just a two-hour drive from the metro. The sight of the volcano from the Tagaytay road is just icing on the cake. To experience the volcano itself, one has to go down, take a boat and trek or ride a horse. It will be an ultimate adventure to experience such activities and feel the heat in the smallest volcano in the world. A trip to Tagaytay must be done as well.

*Sagada. (Mountain Province) Last year when we went to Baguio, I wanted to go to Sagada right away. However, traveling there should be planned ahead of time. I want to experience the culture and the mountain life. I will be captivated by the rice terraces and be caught up in a simple life of the Cordilleras. There are numerous activities that can be done during the stay such as trekking, camping and cave. But I definitely should go there with someone holding my hand when I feel the rush as the bus pass by the cliff on the mountainside.

*Bohol. This province in the Visayan Region is famous for its chocolate Hills and palm-size primates. I heard friends who came here and have been to the Hills say that this is really a wonderful place to see. Diving spots are established in the province and hopefully I will be able to run the shores.

* Subic Bay. (Olongapo City, Zambales) To trek the Mt. Pinatubo Crater is a thrill-seeker's dream. I want to discover the hidden lake, hot springs and various ground formations left by the volcanic eruption in 1992. For animal lovers, this is the place to be. The Ocean Adventure is a home to some aquatic creatures. To see doplhins in the sea is worth the travel but much more to dive with them on the sea, although at an additional fee I think. I was there more than five years ago and it was adventure kids and kid-at-heart should not miss. The Zoobic Safari is the only Tiger safari in the country. It boasts of the interactive experience that it gives its visitors. For those who want to feel an adventure a la survivor, the Jungle Environmental Survival Training Camp is the best place to be. The Aetas would teach you how to perform survival techniques that would surely make your experience one of a kind.

There are so much to see in the Philippines. It's just a matter of good research and exploration for aspiring travelers. Always remember that traveling is as good as the location. The long journey is nothing compared to the scenery, the experience and the adventure. It is always fun to travel with someone or with a group no matter how stressful some of the decision-making might be. No matter how exhausting the trip would be, the fresh air would always make you thankful, refreshed and powerful.

Travel with Mom and Dad

I love to travel. It was a desire brought about by my youth and thirst for adventure. I grew up traveling in the nearby provinces with my family. And almost everyday I go with my parents around the metro running errands. The prices of gas and diesel have risen for the past few years but still, i found ways to roam around. I am not much of a public transport commuter, my father usually drive and send me to places I need to go. He insists that he drive me because there's nothing much to do at home since he retired from work almost five years ago. However, his heart condition make me think twice about asking him to drive me long distances. The traffic, the heat and the unholy streets of the Metro can sometimes take their toll on my Dad's blood pressure. So to avoid heated arguments, adrenaline-rising situations, I often opt to travel with other people or alone.

I wanted to bring my parents to beautiful places, like tourist spots in and out of the country and show them breath-taking scenery. Whenever I see the countryside, I always wished my mom would be there to see it and my dad could smell the cool breeze. However, their age and health limit us in seeing the world beyond our home.

But as my mother once said, I should not let them interfere with my dreams. Much as I wanted to travel with them, I cannot for if I take the chances, we might end up playing with debt from hospital expenses and death. Instead, I shall dream for them. For wherever I may go, I will surely bring my parents in my heart. Pictures and stories of vacation and travel will not suffice but I am sure that they too will travel to beautiful places with breathtaking scenery, without worries of illness or risks of injury, hopefully 40 years from now.

2kX Movies

Upon research I learned that good movie adaptations of books will be released this year. There are few movies I predict will be box-office hits and be the talk of the town upon its playdate. These are my top ten picks for two-tousand ten:

1. Alice in Wonderland. Nothing beats a Johnny Depp-Tim Burton work. A classic literature, Alice will definitely find its way to our hearts.

2. Robin Hood. When I saw the trailer on cable, I thought it was a sequel to Gladiator, a movie that gave Russel Crowe an Oscar. He costars with Cate Blanchett, another Oscar winner. The adventurous and legendary Robin Hood will definitely be scene-stealer this year.

3. Shrek 4 : Forever After. Our favorite green ogre is back again on the silver screen with new stories to tell as he meet various fairy tale characters that once brought us to happily (for)ever after.

4. Prince of Persia : The Sands of Time. Jake Gyllenhaal stars inthe movie adaptation of a video game with the same title. It is an action-adventure set in of course, Persia. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney, I can say this is the next "Pirates of the Carribean" saga.

5. Toy Story 3. Another Walt Disney product, it is a film for kids. Well, not really, this is film for everyone in the family. Anyone who is no longer sure can relate to this as the toys are being packed up because their owner is off for college. This will remind us that our toys brought us joy in our childhood and it would be waste to throw them up the attic instead of sharing them to others or maybe to our children.

6. The Last Airbender. Based on Nickelodeon's animated TV series, this is the Airbender's first attempt in changing their world and restoring the balance of the four elements the world.

7. The Chronicles of Narnia : The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The handsome Prince Caspian is back again, as a King though. This is based on the third book on the series, The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.

8. Rapunzel. A remake of the classic Grimm's fairytale, this Walt Disney production will be in 3D. Rapunzel is voiced by Mandy Moore, so expect a lot of singing a la Disney Princess.

9. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:Part 1. Sad, I know. This is the last chapter of JK Rowling's series of novels. The film was split in two, with the second part to be shown in 2011. Our favorite wizard together with Ron and Hermione will embark on a journey in finding the secret to Voldemort's power.

10. Salt. Starred by Angelina Jolie, this action-packed fictional film revolves around a CIA agent who is believed to be working as a spy for Russia. Jolie, who played the tomb raider before will surely feed our hunger for thriller films seasoned with Jolie's beauty and good acting.

Marami akong hinihintay ngayon.

Paano ang New Year nila?

Magbasa, maghanap, tumuklas.
