No matter how much we prepare for the new year, we still end up unprepared.

We place platters of sumptuous feasts on our dining tables every time we welcome the coming year. We prepare like servants for a night of feasting and eat like gods did. Wishing that in the days to come, our tables shall be filled with food and that we shall never be hungry. We fill our hearts with hope that there shall be showers of blessings all year round.

We decorate our houses with colorful pieces that symbolize wealth, prosperity and safety. We put round ornaments of various colors and sizes to attract wealth and we even light up the sky to send the demons away. We pray to the gods for a prosperous year ahead and send them our offerings of repentance and numerous promises. We commit ourselves to a higher purpose, which is to become better citizens of this world. We create a number of resolutions that have been said years before if not yearly. We always resolve to live life to the fullest.

We plan to make the coming year a better one and with less regrets. We pray for it to be kinder to us and be much more bearable as in the past years.

But despite our efforts and prayers, there still come times in the year when there are droughts and famines, and our pockets empty. When our prayers have turned into curses and promises were broken. Our commitments become lost and we become less of what we supposedly plan early in the year. When bad luck fills us in everything we do and blessings have turned into disasters. And lastly, our resolutions become nothing but a repetition of words and a conclusion that life is fucking hard and it sucks - a lot.

Again at the end of the year, the cycle repeats again.

What rocked NU 107's boat?

I grew up hearing that "NU Rock 107" DJ phrase. I grew up with three older brothers who were either into the New Wave genre or the 80's pop rock. So NU 107 has been a part of my radio life.

What is happening right now is a sign of how far our radio has gone. Remember the time when our grandparents listened to the dramas on the radio, when every Sunday, old songs are played on air and every radio station has its own ID catering to various music genres. Remember when you would sing along when "Lee Kum Kee" is played or the "United American tiki-tiki".

Our radio industry is dying. Why? What is killing it?

Apple did. Chinese portable music players did. You did. I did. With the mass production of mp3 players, mp4s, ipod and phones with music players, anyone can listen to music anytime, anywhere. No need for radio frequencies and signals. Just a computer to which you can download your favorite music or any music that suits your mood or the ambience. Why listen to a radio station and wait for hours to hear your favorite music? Not to mention the casual interruption by advertisers?

Think of how Campus radio which used to be "cool" among College people became the Barangay LS that it is now? Because the College students can now afford a 600 peso worth mp3 bought in Quiapo. Why did the other radio networks followed? Because only few listen to them now.

The only time I can listen to radio networks now is when a ride a jeepney. I remember a friend who joked that he listens to 97.1 or 93.1 is because he is a driver. Through this, one can see the wall that divides the economic classes. The rich plays his type of song with the latest ipod while the poor tunes in to Love radio.

We kill the radio industry every time we make fun of Mr Fu's antics, when we get irritated by Nicole Ayala's broadcast laughter, when we jokingly comment on how jologs radio stations have become. It's not their fault that the times have changed. The Disc Jockeys we look up to have changed course just to stay in business. It was not their fault that advertisers no longer invest on mass media that only the economically-challenged patronize. Was it their fault that you and I no longer listen to one of the earliest forms of mass media?

How shall I tell my children that NU Rock 107 once rocked our youth? How I shall tell them that we shared coffee breaks and smoke while listening to the "NU rock 107, and that was..."

A day in Pyjamas

It's been a while since I last spent the day in pyjamas. I woke up late, stayed in bed for a few more hours, went online, facebooked, surf the net for non-academic reasons, watched TV, ate and slept. Just like a bum. Take a bath late in the day, or skip lunch just to be in bed once more.

After a long time, I finally had lots of time to do nothing. With my usual busy schedule, I practically had lots of time doing lots of things, like running errands, attending classes and socializing. I usually wake up early, take a bath and start my day with my to do list.

It feels a little weird though that despite my efforts of becoming an official bum, I never did. Because here I am, blogging once more in my last night's pyjamas on my unfixed bed.

When was the last time you spent your day in pyjamas?

Musings on the upcoming Barangay Elections

Tomorrow we head again to our respective electoral precincts. People will once again flood local schools to elect the leaders for their communities. The Barangay is the smallest administrative division and political unit next to the family. So, imagine your barangay as a family of families. We know that it is with the family where people get strength, support and care. In a family, you cannot chose who will head it. But in the Barangay, it is up to you to choose the leaders that will guide the family of families into becoming a better societal unit.

Choose your leaders well, you are entrusting them with your community lives as it is part of their responsibility to ensure the safety of your community and its members. You are also placing leaders who will help the community reach its potential and let the community members grow and develop into more responsible citizens.

Cast your votes wisely. Do not be fooled by the friendly neighbour who only became a friend when it was election time.

If on national elections, there is the saying "walang kaibi-kaibigan o kama-kamag-anak", I suppose, there should also be, "Walang kapi-kapitbahay..."

Another Thing to do during sembreak

8. BE A BETTER CYBERSPACE JUNKIE. I forgot that most of us youngsters are into the amazing world of cyberspace. We spend hours in front of our computers doing nothing but surf, click, read, type and click. For internet fanatics, this is the time to update your websites. Those of you who have not updated your profiles on various social networking sites, this is the time because your pictures and templates may have been so last year. You have more time now to reinvent your websites with new software programs that offer more sophisticated and exciting applications. Bloggers may have lagged in their blogs because of their research papers, the break will give you some time to make new experiences and blog it on your site. For those who have not yet blogged, this is also the perfect time to start. Facebook has provided us with games and applications that made friendster lose its place in the market, this sembreak, please check your poker accounts, your sisters in sorority life or your plants on farmville. They are dying to get a glimpse of you for the past months. You may also try updating your multiply account by uploading newer and better pictures. But don't overdo it, cyberspace can be a pain in the ass if you don't know how to manage your internet accounts right.

Things To Do During sem-BREAK

... if you can call it a break, since nowadays, semester breaks last only for a few days. It is best that we make the most of out our break from the world of papers, reports, grades and exams. It's time to take a break from sleepless nights of reading, finishing projects and meeting deadlines. We have crammed our way to meet our deadlines so I bet it would be easier to cram our way to making our few days off more meaningful and memorable.

Here are some things to do to break the boredom spell during the sembreak:

1. SLEEP. First things first. We spent sleepless nights during the finals and had gulped more than a bucket of coffee just to keep us awake for the exams. This is the time to make up for the lost time with your bed and get that sleep you have been dreaming for. For the ladies, this is the time to get that "beauty sleep" which has been very elusive due to deadlines. You may have caught yourself singing, "mahal kita... pero miss na miss na miss ko na ang aking kama at ang malupit kong unan"
But don't sleep for the rest of the break, you have plenty of time to do that in the afterlife.

2. DO VOLUNTEER WORK. Because of the typhoon Juan, many families were left homeless and are in need of your help. There are agencies like the Red Cross that are in need of extra hands to help pack the relief goods to be sent to the affected areas. If you're lucky, you might be sent to join in the distribution of these packages, thus allowing you to travel. It is also a good way to meet new people and have new friends or at least have new facebook friends.
Aside from these perks, it is also good to give a hand to our fellow Filipinos. Not only have you become a good citizen, you have also shown that you are more than your good grades and complete attendance in school. Studies have shown that when doing charity work, the brain releases endorphins that make you feel good.

3. CLEAN UP. I'm sure dust and tons of papers have accumulated on your room over the course of your "I-don't-have-time-to-clean-up" days. This is the time pick up the broom and pick up the pieces of papers that are nothing but memories of your algebra homework or your case presentation. Go through your drawers and clean up the mess brought about by the previous semester. You can sort through your hand-outs and notes ,pile them up and choose which stays and which goes to the trash bin. Or better yet, give them to a lower-batch student who might need those for reference. Not only were you able to help him'her get better grades, you also have de-cluttered your room.
It is also best to have your room cleaned, for a clean room can help you sleep better.

4. CATCH UP ON YOUR FAVOURITE TV-SERIES. DVD-Marathon time or for those who are torrent-lovers, it is time to download all that you can download. Catch up on the episodes that you have missed because of the finals. You can be a couch potato for a day or two without worrying about homework and presentations. You can do this with your friends or family. Not only were you able to finish one season, you also get to bond with the people you care about and missed. Just don't forget to share the chips.

5. TRAVEL. Or do some road-tripping/joyride with your friends without worrying about hurrying home to finish a paper. Again, it's another way to bond with your friends. It does not need to be a long drive out of town. Getting around town or nearby places can be a good way to get over your just-enough-to-pass grade given by your terror prof. You can take a dip at the pool resorts or go to entertainment parks and scream your way up in the air. You can release your angst against your group mates from hell when you take the space shuttle at EK. You can even go to the province and be with your relatives and maybe meet a new friend there.

6. READ. Not the textbooks from school! For crying out loud, please read that fiction book you bought last summer but has not read it yet. Something to enjoy and be entertained with. Not something you have to analyze and make a moral of the story essay. You may hit the nearest bookstore and check the latest bestsellers.

7. REINVENT YOURSELF. Get a makeover. Give yourself some pampering by hitting the spa or your favorite salon. Change your hairstyle, get a massage, a foot spa or have a hair treatment. Some spas and salons offer discounts to students during the break so take advantage of this. It is time to get rid of that pimple brought about by your case presentation by having a facial. When it is time for the next semester, people will be surprised by the fresh new you.
You may have been called "stresstabs model" by your happy-go-lucky friends and this is the time for vengeance and look your best.

I hope our sembreak plans will not be ruined by the forecast rainshowers over the north. There are 365 days in a year, I'm sure the rains can find other days to shower us with blessings.

Eat. Pray. Love.

...and laugh.

It's a good movie especially to those who find themselves strangers to the life they are living.

After watching it, it somehow made me desire and dream to go out see the world, be transformed and discover myself in the process. But I wish that I don't have to break relationships, go halfway around the globe, be away from my family just to find out who I really am and what I really want.

Why do we have to cry, make others cry or ruin relationships just so we can learn? we have given others everything but none for ourselves and it is already to late to realize that we exhausted every bit of ourselves for others?

I hope I don't have to ask these questions myself one day, while traveling through the ruins of the roman empire or while riding an elephant in Thailand. I pray we all have our answers right here, right now.

rxn to inception

I have realized lately that Hollywood is changing and has become less capitalistic than it was a few years back. It is now starting to produce films that deviate from the casual themes of love, life and hate. It is amazing how filmmakers now are beginning to create movies that pose truths and concepts that make us question the essence and existence of the human race and of the realities the human race is in.

Movies such as avatar and inception provide us with a glimpse of literally entering a reality different from our own. A reality that we all want to have because we find our own very boring, uninteresting and complex. It's good to know that the capitalism-serving art group of people, who before have set aside their creativity and gift, are now coming out to tell us to get out of the box, think beyond and under. If one has really understood it, he would ask, "what if?". But since we are too busy surviving life rather than question life itself -its essence and existence, the film just became a narrative of man who crossed realities for the sake of love.

All that we know are just thoughts and ideas presented to us by the people before us. Every knowledge we replaced on our heads by people who believe that these are the things we ought to know and live by. How we perceive and live by these thoughts all depends on our intellectual capacity to digest the thoughts fed to us, whether they are real or perceived real. The facts we received from books may not be facts after all, maybe they are just the facts that authorities and the superpowers want us to believe us facts. Placing an idea or thought on one's head do happen in real life and in so many ways.

The film just asserted my ever standing belief that the human brain is the most powerful tool created. It can create and destroy worlds simply by creating a thought. Any changes in the chemistry of the brain cells is enough to destroy itself or lead it to a better state. How we respond to perceived stimuli will determine our capability to decipher whether what we perceived is real or not. That is why the a man's worst enemy definitely would be his own brain. For every process taking place that go into haywire, can lead to altered state of mind or worse death.

I salute the capitalists-serving art for making efforts in going beyond the borders of money and producing films that make us use our brains and let us realize that we are indeed complex beings.

Teks/Text

TEKS

writing blogs

I am not a good writer but I do love to write. Whenever I felt like doing so, I write whatever is on my mind. I have so many thoughts to share but time has been elusive as it always has.

I did not attend any formal classes on writing except for the communication subjects I had in High School and College but they were all academic-based. I hated writing essays in class because the pen, the paper and the time hinders me from expressing myself completely. If I had to write, I do it on my computer in my own little space at my own time.

Good writers have these so-called rituals before they get to start writing. They even develop habits that without them, they can never produce a good article. There are those who are can only write in the silence of their room, some can write out in the open, noisy street and there are those who write only at more specific and unbelievable places.

People get inspiration from nature, from emotional turmoil or just out of the blue. Even philosophers, statesmen and scientists get inspiration from somewhere one way or another. Famous thinkers have mysterious rituals before they can start working. Writers are no different. Bloggers,on the other hand only need a computer and an internet connection just to get started.

Blogging has been the trend nowadays especially among the younger crowd, with the majority of those who write and maintain blogs did not get formal training on writing. Blogging as they say is the future of writing. One does not need a proofreader or an editor so that he can publish his thoughts to a number of people. Publishing on the World Wide Web has become easier because of the networking sites and blog sites that encourage people to express themselves freely. The aesthetics of writing are now confined on school or academic papers, journals and newspapers.

It is good to know that people can now express themselves to the billions of people around the world through the internet. Although I must admit sometimes it has gone too far. People are now encouraged to write and share their thoughts to the rest of the world, luckily I belong to that crowd.

Because of the invention of blogs, I can now call myself a writer and so are you.

Running Acad Oval part 1

It's been a while since I last jogged around the campus. It felt good since for the past months, I had spent my weight loss activities in the confines of a gym. Going outside for a workout was refreshing and it felt different. I found it difficult to run the mile knowing that at the end of each round, you are not there to greet me. I am used to jogging while you were conducting your general assembly meetings or spending quality time with your brothers. I am drowned in my own thoughts as I ran and you are trying to solve the issues as you sit down drowned in your own politics.
At the end of my rounds, we drown ourselves in our little world.

I miss running while you were biking at my side or you, just waiting at your usual spot in the kiosk. I miss the laughter we share at the end of my run (I think I burn more calories when you make me laugh). And when we have plenty to spend, our food trip at the Chocolate Kiss while I'm still in my workout clothes drenched in sweat while the people around us were either in their formal or "dining out" clothes.

This was actually the first time I ran while you are miles away lighting a play I will never see. I did burn calories but not as much as I will when we are together...

Special Olympics 1

Im so happy today for I learned a lot in the Special Olympics. I learned a lot from a nun who devoted her life reaching out to disadvantaged children with special needs (CSN) and to a college professor who committed his life to helping CSN. One day, I will use my knowledge in health to reach out to these children and hopefully to the other members of the society.

I just pray that my Lighting Director would guide me all the way.

breaking up is just so hard to do...

"Grace, paano ba makipagbreak?"

I almost fell down the moment I read this text message on my cellphone, knowing that the message was from someone special who just recently had entered his so-called "eto na ito" relationship.

I replied by saying,
"Ewan ko. Maghanap ka ng iba. Wag ka magpakita ng isang buwan. di ba kabisado mo na dapat yan."

I gave an answer that I did not even bother to think about first or never at all. I do not think I am in the right position to answer such query. For I only had two relationships in my life. So my experience of break-ups is somehow still lacking, although I had my major roles in both break-ups. I had both played the heart breaker and the heartbroken. In my first relationship I admit I am the heart breaker. I broke a man's heart by falling for someone else, I broke it further when I entered a whirlwind romance (whirlwind indeed for it lasted shortly). I am the heart broken in the second relationship. I did not initiate the break-up process but I initiated the events that lead to it and in the end I was the one who was left behind.

I try not to put myself in the character of a heartbroken as the weakest in the relationship. I did cry, felt helpless and hopeless for sometime. But it depends whether one considers himself as the the broken or the breaker. A positive perspective would make someone look at himself in the failed relationship as someone who lost or gained something. I lost the relationship but I gained life. A new, stronger and wiser one.

So the two reasonable ways to break-up that I advised that someone were drawn from my subconsciousness. Because those two reasons were basically what happened to me. I just had different perspectives on both break-ups.

For someone who's had many relationships before and who happens to be my senior, I do not think he should have asked me that question. But I guess he thought my answer would give him a different perspective or maybe I had a different way of breaking it up. The truth is, I do. I had my own ways on how to break a relationship. I just hope that I will never have to do it again. Because breaking up is just so hard to do.

Full Moon

Every time I am out on the streets I always looked up in the sky, always looking for than tiny white thing. I am fascinated by its beauty, its glamor and prowess in the midst of an infinite space. Despite its solitude and distance from other heavenly bodies, it never fails to bring people together. Making them look up and dream for a prosperous day ahead. I have yet to see what the moon will bring to my future, but I am sure it will give me something beautiful tonight.

A few nights in a month the moon becomes full. On such occasions, I am nostalgic. It is not every night do we see the moon at its finest. Those are the nights when the space above is full - of stars, the moon and sky. Nature is complete when the moon shows its face, uninhibited and full of strength. The moon changes the color of its glow depending on the solar system's movement and surprisingly, the mood among its viewers changes too.

Many gather strength from the moon; there are others who become alive the moment the moon fills up the empty sky and there are those who start their lives upon the striking of the moon in the evening sky. Up there in all its glory, it shines on the earth with a mixture of a fearful and endearing glow. Its light reflects on the deep blue sea, uniting the air and water.

For the scientists it is just another body in the cosmos, an omen to the mystics, a romantic gesture to the hopeless lover, a clock to the magician and a guiding light to the nocturnal hunter. I do not know what I shall call the moon; I have nothing special for it other than a creation to admire every night and something to share with a loved one.

May the moon be anything but death for when it comes, the earth will just be a once-in-a-blue-moon event that transcended space.

mary

Before the year ended, we shared a night like no other. We were in a dark room yet the light you emitted was enough to show me who you really are. Your outline, the touch of your skin and your scent drove me crazy. It was an exciting night knowing that after many years of my existence, I would finally meet you face-to-face. There was only a brief introduction because we felt like we have known each other for a long time. I know you from the books, the media, the government and the adventurers but I have yet to know the real you. You know all about me, my need to escape, my desire to experience and my angst. You said you will give me your services for free as long as I do not fall in love with you head over heels. We will hook up as agreed; no obligations, no regrets and free of charge.

I ran my fingers against your body. I shivered at the thought that finally we will be one. You touched me in places like no one else can and we breathed the same cold air. In the silence of the night you sang with Ivy,

Bye Bye baby, don’t be long
I’ll worry about you while you’re gone…

All my worries got lost in space the moment you kissed me. Time stopped and there was no turning back. It is now or never. All that I was taught about you were forgotten the instant you penetrated me. Yes, we were finally one. You went inside me and took my soul away; with it were the truths I strongly believed in. I did not fight back instead I gave it all. You wrapped me in your arms and I felt your warmth inside me. You warmed my cold heart and it suddenly pumped back to life.

My resurrected heart worked faster than ever, I do not know if it was the thrill of the moment or your presence that made it race like hell. All I know is that you made me be someone that the society thinks is not capable of committing a crime much more go out with you. You created a reality for me, a reality free from oppression, from love, from myself and free from truths.
You gave us a reality very different from mine, although at the back of my mind I know it will not last. It never will.

You took my breath away but still I gasped that you do not stop. It was a perfect bliss. You were all over me; passionately burning and clouding the space around us. Your spirit sustained me until your fire died.

The people are against us. They want you away from this world where you can no longer hurt people. Every minute was a struggle with the thought that what was happening is a sin, a crime against society. If they find us together, we could both be dead.

What they said were true. You were classy that Dunhill, better than Winston by tenfold and stronger than what the Fortune teller foretold. You were better than a man for you brought me effortlessly to heaven. We flew to never land. That night you were mine and I am yours, my Mary.

It does not matter what the others call you. Your former lovers may call you a thousand endearing names but you are my opium and my only one night stand.

I am sorry I broke the rules. I fell in love with you. When shall I see you again? I want to hear your sweet promises; I need to feel you again. When will you cloud the room that we once shared? I looked for you in the Fair grounds but did not feel your presence. When years before, we always had brief encounters in the midst of the University grounds. I have not forgotten about you and I never will. I am worried while you are gone. I cannot wait to create a new and different reality with you, even if it is short-lived.

I am singing you this while waiting for your return.

…Baby, don’t be long
I’ll worry about you while you’re gone…
I’ll think of you in my dreams,
You never know just what you mean to me.

Nakakatawa, broadcasted na ang order in a systematic way naman.

meeting old friends

I already had planned how my day should go. Have my picture taken at UP SC, then buy meds for the parents, run some other errands and get my laptop. As I was walking, I felt the urge to have something cold as the heat of the summer kisses me. The nearest fruit shake stand did not have what I had in my mind. I found it odd that they do not serve avocado shake, saying it was out of the season whjen I knew it wasn't. Nevertheless I went to a hunt and moved to another store despite it's distance from I should be really going. A sudden change in my planned route led me to a famous carinderia in UP. While waiting in cue, I was tapped by an old friend who happened to drop by UP since it was a city holiday in Mandaluyong. She is with another good friend and talked for hours, laughing and recalling the old UP days. The org days actually, since it was what brought us together in the first place. We chatted on how the org was, the gossips, issues - political and romantic, the people whom we miss dearly. We laughed and on the good times, how we were then and now. We relayed the mishaps and misadventures we have encountered since we got out of UP. Funny how much we have grown yet still had that youthful college spirit.

As we decided to part ways since it was getting dark, we passed by Mang Larry's Isaw, which is already an icon of UP culture. We decided to grab a bite, only to realize that another former orgmates were there too. Again, we chatted, laughed and caught up on each others' lives. It is true that once a working person visits his old college campus would feel young again. Others felt relaxed, rejuvenated and filled with the old youthful energy. They felt it and I did too. I don't know if it had to do witht he fresh air, the cool breeze or the trees surrounding the campus. I think it is the memories that we would hold on for the rest of our lives. The experiences of joy, heartache, fulfillment, deadlines and friendships that we had would always be imprinted in our memories.

Then it was getting dark. We still have work and classes to attend to the next day so the need to the end of meeting was inevitable.

I had a good time and I know they did too. I did finish my errands and still had time to write this. Earlier, I was worried I may not do what I was supposed to do today. I was afraid the plans I had for this day would remain just a plan and will be executed the following day or the next. But I did make it.

Sometimes circumstances would make us change how we live our lives. A simple change in plan might change the everything. Well, not really simple changes will not do harm unless you get too engorge you forgot your duties and responsibilities. Sometimes letting it all flow and let nature take its course would make you happier and more fulfilled.

That sudden change in my route and schedule for the day left me happier. I was not exhausted, nay, I felt energized. We all wished that we could still live our lives the way we did before. But everybody has to grow up and see the real world.

So for anyone who is in college now, enjoy while it lasts. And when it ends, feel free to drop by your college campus once in a while. It will bring you back to the old days when everything was free; when you were not yet a taxpayer and you were still your own master.

UAAP inspired 2k10 Presidential Race

Sharing a cup of coffee with friends has been a part of my social life. One late night, we hanged out in a coffee shop along Katipunan Avenue. Since we talked almost about everything that happens in the society, we came across the 2010 Presidential race. Though we are not registered voters at the time, we each knew whose names we want to write on the ballots. However different are choices were, we managed to give points on why we chose our own candidates; from their public service experience, their relations to big financial corporations, their family background, political affiliations and the so-called hidden political agenda even the possible outcomes of the above-mentioned factors to the present Philippine socio-econo-political status. At the heat of the discussion, one claimed that the presidential race is UAAP inspired. Maybe the reason this was opened up was that the coffee shop is situated between UP Diliman and Ateneo De Manila University. Based on what we knew then, we finally realized that yes, the presidential candidates we were discussing either came from any of the universities that play in the UAAP. But this was a month ago. Now, new players joined the race or should I say, popularity contest.

I decided to assert the claim that the 2k10 presidential race is UAAP inspired. Much to my surprise, they all either had their undergraduate studies, graduate studies, post-graduate studies, or took up Law in those universities. The claim was somehow proven but some points we had were rejected as Bayani did not come from UP as we previously thought and Gordon had his undergraduate degree in Ateneo, not UP.

The candidates have come from various top universities and colleges. I never really looked at a candidate's educational attainment, although the level of education attained would give bearing to a person's capabilities, strength and personality. Some candidates give emphasis on their education, making it a proof that they are well-educated and trained for a service as great as te presidency.

Of all the candidates for President and Vice President, it is Jejomar Binay who has the highest educational attainment and the most number of degrees and has attended numerous schools. I bet he loves to learn and gives a great importance of education.

Three of the presidential candidates attended the early education at the Ateneo Grade School or Ateneo High School. Meaning they had the means to attend a private school as such and that the school indeed lives up to its vision and has produced leaders in the society.

Since the internet is my only source of information as of the moment, the credibility of this information may be questionable and lacking as Jamby Madrigal and Edu Manzano did not provide their educational attainment on the election profiles circulating around the net. Thus this blog is open for corrections.

It is my greatest wish that these candidates would give a great emphasis on educational reforms and ensure that the Filipino youth grows up to be an educated, respectful and healthy man. Some of these presidential aspirants were born poor and yet have managed to become successful in their respective fields. They may have lacked the resources to enter a good educational institution but still made it to the plenary halls and served the Filipino people, which is the greatest achievement of all.

Phillipine Holidays for 2010

According to my research on the Internet, we have many Philippine Holidays this year. Thanks to Republic Act 9492, which provides that non-religious holidays be moved to the nearest Monday, we have longer weekends allowing us more time to spend with family, friends or with our bed.

For those who want to travel this year, please check the following holidays so you can prepare for that much-awaited trip you always dreamed of.

Based on PGMA's Presidential Proclamation 184, these are the declared regular holidays, special (non-working) days and special holidays (for all schools) for the 2010. But please check with the local news for any changes or with your boss who might have other plans for you these holidays.

January 1 – New Year’s Day

April 1 – Maundy Thursday
April 2 – Good Friday
April 9 -Araw ng Kagitingan

May 1 – Labor Day
May 10- National elections

June 14 – Independence Day (supposedly June 12, in case you might get confused)
August 30 – National Heroes Day

November 29 – Bonifacio Day (supposedly November 30)

December 25 – Christmas Day
December 27 – Rizal Day (December 30).

The Special Holidays are as follows:

February 22 – EDSA Day (School Holidays)
August 23 – Ninoy Aquino Day

November 1 – All Saints Day

December 24 – Christmas Eve
December 31- Last day of the year

There are also holidays depending on the city where you work or study, like Quezon City Day which falls on August 19th, check the Net for such info or better yet check with your municipal office.

If the government wishes to declare holidays for special purposes like a death of a political or religious leader, in the middle of a disaster, a storm, national emergencies, it will be announced in every news channel so be sure to check the local news program once in a while.

Go make that holiday worthwhile, not stay in bed wishing for it to last forever. Plan that holiday dream now, may it be just finishing a book you have been reading for years, go out of town or meet your high school friends whom you have not seen since high school graduation.

Dreaming is the first step, Planning is next.

Happy Holidays!

AVATAR (a socio-econo political outlook)

I finally saw the much-talked about movie of 2009, "Avatar". I was excited the moment the 3D glasses was handed to me. It was my first and definitely will be the start of many more 3D film-watching.

It met my expectations, the graphics, the digital enhancement and the whole artistic effect. The so many socio-econo-political issues that the movie exposed made it really worth my money and my time.

I am more than a film critic. I see what a film feeds its viewers and I look beyond the obvious. The rest of the world may give a standing ovation for a movies' cinematic features but for me a movie is worth a stand only when it conveys reality, informs the audience and imparts truth.

Just like almost all Hollywood films, it once again showed the strength of the US Military. Providing us with visuals of the future of technology, that the institution holds the future of the military defense.

The following are interesting points to discuss for the intellectual and the critical:

1. US Military vs. Science

One conflict that was evident in the movie was the conflicting beliefs and systems of science and the military itself. It is true that the military does work with science or somehow a science itself. But let us look beyond, the science team works based on observation and countless data while the military team works with observation, countless data and terror. Science acts based on cognition, Military acts based on its feelings. The latter uses aggression to get what it wants, diplomacy usually does not prevail because its system of beliefs does not work on such virtues. It is a male-dominated institution, so it is fueled by logic and empowered by testosterone, actually lots of it. In some cases it only works based on the sudden rise of the male hormone and adrenaline. The scientists wanted to gather more information, more analysis and more careful planning. They wanted to exercise diplomacy to get what they want but when they are in conflict with the men of war, they were overpowered by the latter's aggression and strength.
No wonder towards the end of the film, they became trigger-happy swines and proved that men are indeed members of the animal kingdom.

2. Stop U.S. Aggression

The U.S. had always been part of almost every war in the whole world. It does not stop there, even in outer space, they are using its power to steal resources for its own income. They will do all measures to get a nation's natural resources and gain money even if it meant destroying life. It has always used it top-of-the-line technology to create a relationship masking as a friendly one with benefits. As soon as it has sucked all the resources that are of its interest, it leaves and moves on to the next one.
How many nations has this country destroyed to get gold, diamond, oil and so many other resources? How many people were sent to kill each other for the benefit of the U.S. government or at least by its rulers? How many have been deceived by its prowess? How many have been abused, threatened and killed to give way to its plans of a new world? Countless.
It has ruled the world in so many decision -making and has bypassed many authorities to pursue its interests. It has conducted numerous friendly visits, donations and peacekeeping acts only to mask its true intentions. It loans money for an interest greater than its original value.
Stop U.S. Aggression on the natives, of tribes and of innocent people. Stop the war for fuel.

3. WAR is never the answer.

Wars have brought so many deaths and destruction more than any other event in history. Not only it is very costly, it also deceives people that anger and hate will solve the problem. It is natural to be angry and hate enemies but terrorizing them and later kill them will only make you be more angry and aggressive.
A war only propels one's ego. A war is declared not really to defend a nation but to satisfy a nation's pride and ego. It is after all pride and ego that has led rulers to declare war.
Offense is not always the best defense. Diplomacy and communication are the answer. But make sure the negotiator is the best man for the job.

4. We are one with Nature.
A single change in the balance of nature can lead to numerous damages. Nature is one with us and we are related. May the flower that bloomed in a minute and died the next will have an effect on a butterfly or on a lady who was captivated by its beauty.
Everything we need is in nature all we have to do is find and use it. Nature can heal us and empower us. She has provided protection, care and strength in times of crisis. Think of the numerous medicines sold on drugstores, they promised good health and cures but the natural sometimes still work better and brought good results. If one contradicts Nature, balance will be altered and might lead to chaos.

5. It is the future

The star wars saga introduced us to a possibility that in the future, nations of other planets or stars can come together and form the Confederation. It gave us a glimpse of what is now and tomorrow. AS what I have always asked, "what is next after 3D, video calls and the computer?" The hologram. Tomorrow we might be talking to our relatives in a form of a hologram projected before our very eyes through a small gadget.
We might sleep and enter a new body in a different space and time with the same consciousness. We might even be friends with our planetary neighbors and even shop in the moon. There are countless possibilities but science fiction may be fiction now but tomorrow it becomes reality.
It is true that some movies inspired inventors and scientist to create something beyond our imagination. So I often wondered whether these films predicted the future or they created the future. Or perhaps, these filmmakers have been to future or they have been in the past and are just bringing these information to us through the big screen.
One thing is for sure though, film makers and writers like these are courageous geniuses who went out of the box, defied reality and went against their colleagues advices. How I wonder who amongst us Filipinos would do the same. How I wish that one of us would bring us the future.

6. There is always Someone or Something to look up to

No matter what tribe, nation or reality we are in we will always have Someone to guide us. It may not be God, Allah or Eywa but there is someone stronger and powerful than us who will be our refuge. Someone whom we will seek for help, cure and strength. Someone or something that will bring us all together in one place.
Every civilization has its own deity. For every civilized man believes that there is something higher than him, that there is a Higher being that put him into existence. Often we forget to look up to the Being higher than us, but never in a man's life that he will never look up this Being.
Man would always create this Higher Being through any form he can because without it, he feels incomplete.

Backpacking Dreamer

Gracee will see places this year and the next. Dreaming is free but if chances do happen, then she shall make miracles for herself and for her friends. Just like what any traveling agent would say, "find a place, plan your stay and we will do the rest".

We are free to travel, however travel expenses take that freedom from us. But that should not stop us from making plans even if in the end, none of the plans get implemented. So here are the places I would like to see this year of the Tiger. Whichever comes first does not matter as long as they happen.

*Boracay. (Aklan) Considered one of the best beaches in the world, its white sand and crystal waters make it a haven for local and international tourists. I want to walk its fine sand and cool waters this year. The accommodations range from the luxurious to the tight in budget traveler but as for every one who happened to be there before, it is worth every peso.

*Puerto Princesa City. (Palawan) A highly-urbanized city in the South, it caters to various tourists every year. I want to see the underground rivers, crocodile farm and dive the clear waters along its coastline.

*Anawangin Cove. (Zambales) This place is famous among campers and backpackers for there are no commercialized resorts nor buildings around the area. It also has white sand and surprisingly some pine trees lining the shore. Boatrides and long walks are pretty much the mode of transportation here so as some bloggers suggested, it is better to travel in groups. So I think I really need to find some friends to go with me. Anyone interested?

* Taal Lake. (Batangas) Coming to this place is just a two-hour drive from the metro. The sight of the volcano from the Tagaytay road is just icing on the cake. To experience the volcano itself, one has to go down, take a boat and trek or ride a horse. It will be an ultimate adventure to experience such activities and feel the heat in the smallest volcano in the world. A trip to Tagaytay must be done as well.

*Sagada. (Mountain Province) Last year when we went to Baguio, I wanted to go to Sagada right away. However, traveling there should be planned ahead of time. I want to experience the culture and the mountain life. I will be captivated by the rice terraces and be caught up in a simple life of the Cordilleras. There are numerous activities that can be done during the stay such as trekking, camping and cave. But I definitely should go there with someone holding my hand when I feel the rush as the bus pass by the cliff on the mountainside.

*Bohol. This province in the Visayan Region is famous for its chocolate Hills and palm-size primates. I heard friends who came here and have been to the Hills say that this is really a wonderful place to see. Diving spots are established in the province and hopefully I will be able to run the shores.

* Subic Bay. (Olongapo City, Zambales) To trek the Mt. Pinatubo Crater is a thrill-seeker's dream. I want to discover the hidden lake, hot springs and various ground formations left by the volcanic eruption in 1992. For animal lovers, this is the place to be. The Ocean Adventure is a home to some aquatic creatures. To see doplhins in the sea is worth the travel but much more to dive with them on the sea, although at an additional fee I think. I was there more than five years ago and it was adventure kids and kid-at-heart should not miss. The Zoobic Safari is the only Tiger safari in the country. It boasts of the interactive experience that it gives its visitors. For those who want to feel an adventure a la survivor, the Jungle Environmental Survival Training Camp is the best place to be. The Aetas would teach you how to perform survival techniques that would surely make your experience one of a kind.

There are so much to see in the Philippines. It's just a matter of good research and exploration for aspiring travelers. Always remember that traveling is as good as the location. The long journey is nothing compared to the scenery, the experience and the adventure. It is always fun to travel with someone or with a group no matter how stressful some of the decision-making might be. No matter how exhausting the trip would be, the fresh air would always make you thankful, refreshed and powerful.

Travel with Mom and Dad

I love to travel. It was a desire brought about by my youth and thirst for adventure. I grew up traveling in the nearby provinces with my family. And almost everyday I go with my parents around the metro running errands. The prices of gas and diesel have risen for the past few years but still, i found ways to roam around. I am not much of a public transport commuter, my father usually drive and send me to places I need to go. He insists that he drive me because there's nothing much to do at home since he retired from work almost five years ago. However, his heart condition make me think twice about asking him to drive me long distances. The traffic, the heat and the unholy streets of the Metro can sometimes take their toll on my Dad's blood pressure. So to avoid heated arguments, adrenaline-rising situations, I often opt to travel with other people or alone.

I wanted to bring my parents to beautiful places, like tourist spots in and out of the country and show them breath-taking scenery. Whenever I see the countryside, I always wished my mom would be there to see it and my dad could smell the cool breeze. However, their age and health limit us in seeing the world beyond our home.

But as my mother once said, I should not let them interfere with my dreams. Much as I wanted to travel with them, I cannot for if I take the chances, we might end up playing with debt from hospital expenses and death. Instead, I shall dream for them. For wherever I may go, I will surely bring my parents in my heart. Pictures and stories of vacation and travel will not suffice but I am sure that they too will travel to beautiful places with breathtaking scenery, without worries of illness or risks of injury, hopefully 40 years from now.

2kX Movies

Upon research I learned that good movie adaptations of books will be released this year. There are few movies I predict will be box-office hits and be the talk of the town upon its playdate. These are my top ten picks for two-tousand ten:

1. Alice in Wonderland. Nothing beats a Johnny Depp-Tim Burton work. A classic literature, Alice will definitely find its way to our hearts.

2. Robin Hood. When I saw the trailer on cable, I thought it was a sequel to Gladiator, a movie that gave Russel Crowe an Oscar. He costars with Cate Blanchett, another Oscar winner. The adventurous and legendary Robin Hood will definitely be scene-stealer this year.

3. Shrek 4 : Forever After. Our favorite green ogre is back again on the silver screen with new stories to tell as he meet various fairy tale characters that once brought us to happily (for)ever after.

4. Prince of Persia : The Sands of Time. Jake Gyllenhaal stars inthe movie adaptation of a video game with the same title. It is an action-adventure set in of course, Persia. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney, I can say this is the next "Pirates of the Carribean" saga.

5. Toy Story 3. Another Walt Disney product, it is a film for kids. Well, not really, this is film for everyone in the family. Anyone who is no longer sure can relate to this as the toys are being packed up because their owner is off for college. This will remind us that our toys brought us joy in our childhood and it would be waste to throw them up the attic instead of sharing them to others or maybe to our children.

6. The Last Airbender. Based on Nickelodeon's animated TV series, this is the Airbender's first attempt in changing their world and restoring the balance of the four elements the world.

7. The Chronicles of Narnia : The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The handsome Prince Caspian is back again, as a King though. This is based on the third book on the series, The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.

8. Rapunzel. A remake of the classic Grimm's fairytale, this Walt Disney production will be in 3D. Rapunzel is voiced by Mandy Moore, so expect a lot of singing a la Disney Princess.

9. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:Part 1. Sad, I know. This is the last chapter of JK Rowling's series of novels. The film was split in two, with the second part to be shown in 2011. Our favorite wizard together with Ron and Hermione will embark on a journey in finding the secret to Voldemort's power.

10. Salt. Starred by Angelina Jolie, this action-packed fictional film revolves around a CIA agent who is believed to be working as a spy for Russia. Jolie, who played the tomb raider before will surely feed our hunger for thriller films seasoned with Jolie's beauty and good acting.

Marami akong hinihintay ngayon.

Paano ang New Year nila?
